What defines a top-notch Pilates instructor goes far beyond knowing the exercises. It is a blend of technical expertise, intuitive teaching, and the ability to create an experience that keeps clients coming back- not just for the workout, but for how they feel while they are here. At its best, Pilates is both disciplined and deeply human. The following principles reflect the standard we hold ourselves to and the experience we strive to deliver in every session:
#1. A top notch pilates instructor gives clear, precise instructions, teaches with strong technique, maintains flow and stays fully present so students can successfully move with confidence and control.
#2. Teach a challenging class with modifications for every level. Every exercise should be set up with sound form, then layered with options so each client can customize the work to their level, ability and needs during the hour. ( Not every day is the same).
#3. Warm engagement is rooted in genuine connection. It means seeing and addressing the whole person standing in front of us. When we ask, “How is your body feeling?” We are also asking, “How has your week been?” recognizing that physical tension often carries the imprint of daily life. It shows up in the details: remembering a client prefers a pillow under their head, adjusting a spring before they even ask, or noticing when something feels off and offers support. These small acts communicate care, attentiveness, and trust. Most importantly, it is about celebrating progress together. Every improvement, no matter how small, is acknowledged with sincerity- as if it were our own. That shared sense of accomplishment strengthens connection and keeps clients feeling seen, supported and valued.
#4. Every class is designed with specific goals that thoughtfully vary and progress each client’s work. By keeping content fresh, purposeful and engaging, we not only maintain interest but also ensure clients stay on track with their individual progress. This balance of structure and variety creates an environment where clients feel challenged and supported, making each session effective and enjoyable.
#5. Attentive form correction is delivered with subtlety and care, without interrupting the flow of the class or over-talking. Effective coaching guides clients with quiet precision, allowing adjustments to happen naturally and confidently. The goal is to support each student without making them feel singled out or self-conscious. Thoughtful, understanded cues create a safe and encouraging environment where clients can improve while staying fully engaged in their work.
#6. Class flow should feel seamless, with each movement naturally leading into the next. As one of my senior educators once said, a great pilates class is like a dance- each exercise connected through intentional transitions, guided by a steady pace and rhythm. The continuity creates a sense of ease and focus, allowing students to stay fully immersed in their work while the workout unfolds with purpose.
#7. Top notch instructors maintain a strong awareness of injuries and possess the knowledge to offer thoughtful, immediate modifications. Before class begins, we check in with each client to understand how their body is feeling that day, noting any concerns so we can respond appropriately. This attentiveness allows us to adapt exercises with confidence, ensuring clients feel safe, supported, and able to continue their workout with disruption.
#8. Students leave class with a noticeable lift- more energy in their step, smiles and a sense of lightness in their body. They walk out feeling better than when they arrived, both physically and mentally. That positive, uplifting shift becomes something they look forward to. We often call it “Pilates endorphins” and it’s very real.
#9. We create an environment where hard work and enjoyment go hand in hand. Humor, lightness, and genuine connection matter here- we are not just instructors, we are good company. Over the years, some of us have been jokingly been compared to “drill sergeants.” While I would not claim that title, I do believe great instructors thoughtfully challenge clients to go beyond what they might choose on their own. That balance- supportive yet motivating- is why clients trust us to guide their pilates journey. Through intentional effort, encouraging coaching, and the right amount of “push,” we help each client discover what they are truly capable of.
#10. Music and ambiance help shape the entire client experience. Uplifting music, positive energy, and a thoughtfully created environment sets the vibe the moment a client walks in. It’s something they feel in their bodies before it can even be put into words. A sense of ease, energy and welcome that enhances every movement in the space.
At Lowcountry Power Pilates Studio, this is our standard. It is what defines our teaching, shapes our community, and sets the tone for every class we offer. When expertise, intention, and connection come together, clients do not just complete a workout- they experience meaningful progress, renewed energy, and a deeper confidence in their bodies. This is what keeps them coming back, and I am so proud of our team and what we deliver every day. It is truly an honor, so thank you! We love hearing from you and any suggestions and or milestones, so please share them! Inspiration goes both ways and we want to hear from you.
